This past weekend, Emma and I planted seeds for our garden this year. And as I sat with her at the kitchen table, thinking about how we were planting seeds in more ways than one.
We were spending time together, chatting and laughing over these little packets of seeds and over these little mounds of soil. She somehow always got the packets with the tiniest seeds…but she has young eyes…so it was perfect! haha
Even though there weren’t any ground-shaking truths that I bestowed upon her while we sat there sorting and counting seeds…it was a tiny sliver of time that we got to sit and do something together that would bring much fruit to bear for our family in the coming months.
I think about these things often as we are on the tail end of parenting days. Yes, they’ll always call…we’ll always be there…but I feel like we’ve done our best. And now we water them from time to time, we set them up in the best possible scenarios that we can provide for them…and we pray over them…and we wait to watch them sprout, then be transplanted (college here they come), and then we watch them grow into full, strong plants that will bear great fruit!
There’s no guide book for any of this…parenting, life, business…don’t you feel like we are all doing these things in life? A little water, a little sunlight, the best conditions we can find, and then we pray and watch!! haha It can really be that simple….but we complicate so many things. I know I surely do! I overthink, I overplan, I overcrowd….but gardening forces me to slow down, to plan, to be patient, to be attentive in the smallest ways. And to think about how we are planting seeds in more ways than one. The girls and I will enjoy the garden this spring and summer like we did last year…and I can’t wait for those first few tomatoes and cucumbers!!!
This year, we got our seeds from Bucktown Seeds. I’m so excited to try them out!!!
Blessings,
