Truth be told—it was a high school football game that lit the flame for my passion for Senior Photography and taught me the gift of being a senior photographer.

The Friday Night Lights had just come on and the stands were frantic with energy for the game that was about to start…and as I slid down the row to our seats, she grabbed my hand.

“Ms. Corry, thank you soooo much for my Senior Portraits!!! You made me look so BEAUTIFUL! And I LOVE them!!”

An instant lump appeared in my throat…and I responded “Oh sweet girl, I didn’t make you look beautiful, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL! There’s no special magic to what I do, that’s what you look like. You’re a beauty, both inside and out!”

As I sat down on the bleachers, my heart was thrilled that she was happy with her Senior Portraits…but my heart also sank a little, realizing that she didn’t see herself as everyone around her…including my camera lens…saw her. It was then, seven years ago, that I knew I had to work with Seniors. It became my mission to show them their own inner and outer beauty!

Working with Seniors makes more of an impact than so many people realize. This is a very critical time in their lives. They are discovering so much about themselves, figuring out what their next chapter after high school might look like, deciding how to respond to peer pressure, how to decipher societal pressures and cultural identifications. And that’s not including the normal day to day activities of classes, teachers, tests, sports, theater, band, etc, that they find themselves navigating. Being a teenager in our current world is tough…and if I can change the way they see themselves in just two hours and plant the seeds of confidence and self love through my lens…I AM HERE FOR IT!!!!

As photographers, we are documenting life in snippets of time. Likely, the next time the Seniors we work with will have their portraits taken in a big way will be when they are getting ready to walk down the aisle. When I mention this at our shoots, moms typically tear up…realizing that it is very true. So treasure these times you have to help them document these memories and love on those mamas…they need us too!!!
