I often read blog posts about having a work/life balance. I usually laugh and scroll past…I have three teenage daughters, a husband in the military, a growing business that I run alone….who has time for a life? Mine looks more like a work/work balance! Wait, that’s not a balance?!!?

This is what a typical day in my crazy life looks like…get ready, grab your coffee…you’re going to need it.

5:15am stumble out of bed to wake my 3 sleeping beauties (sounds pleasant…sometimes it’s a screamfest…just keepin’ it real)
7:00am carpool drop-off
7:30am walk the dog and prayer time
8:30am work, work, work (blog writing, business expense report, online banking, etc)
12:00pm a bite of lunch
12:02pm work, work, work (session editing and blogging)
3:30pm High School tennis match for our oldest daughter
4:30pm head across town to see twinnies cheer for Middle School football game
6:00pm think about dinner
6:30pm barter for who is cleaning up from dinner
7:00pm work, work, work (answering emails, posting instagram pics, prepping for the next day, etc.)
11:00pm fall into bed exhausted

Hmmmm…yeah, I need to work on carving out a little more than oh 32 minutes of something for me…actually, walking the dog isn’t for me, it’s for her. hahahahaha Seriously?!?!

I used to really enjoy decorating for the different seasons, adding new pieces to our collection each year. I made wreaths, painted pumpkins with my kids, made special yummy treats….I even made Grace a pumpkin cake for her birthday one year…the ONLY time I EVER used my bundt pan. I also made Maddie and Emma fishy cakes for their Nemo birthday party.

Then my kids got older, I went back to work full time, and life just steam rolled over my Martha Stewart aspirations. Now, we are lucky to throw some pumpkins on the front porch, scrounge together a Halloween costume, and pray that I start Christmas shopping before December 24th! Hahahahaha

I heard Jessica Turner speak at the Pursuit Conference this past spring where she talked about creating balance in our busy lives.  I finally had a chance to read Jessica’s book The Fringe Hours where she talks about using “extra” hours of our days for things that we love and that feed our souls.  Her words have been rolling around in my head and finally made their way into my heart this weekend.  Laundry was going to have to wait…

So this weekend, I decided that it was time for me to do something crafty! I called up my friend who happens to be an EXPERT wreath and bow maker and we went to town to get some Halloween ribbon for wreath making. We ended up popping in to Marshall’s where I found an amazing desk chair for my office, then to Old Navy for a cute flannel to wear under my new vest (ok, it’s really Grace’s new vest, but I bought it with the intention of snagging it for myself once in a while), and even stopped in for a coffee. What?!?!!? This NEVER happens! It was so nice to have some time for girl talk, shopping, over-priced coffee, and crafting.

I’m a very driven person. Some people call it a workaholic…I call it striving to always do my best. What this means though is that I don’t always take time to do things that simply make me happy. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my work…it’s my passion. But sometimes I need to step away from it and do something else that I am equally passionate about. I find that when I do it feeds my creativity which then leads to reinvigorated inspiration in my business.

Carving out time for a few of these things each week is my new goal. If you are a mom and business owner, please know that I struggle with this concept of balance on a daily basis and I’d love to hear about how you manage it all….I’m sure you do it way better than I do. 🙂

Kevin is the Master Pumpkin Carver and it is an annual tradition that the girls climb up on the kitchen counter and help him.  Love these sweet faces!

This weekend I FINALLY made a new wreath….thanks Christy for the fun!

And I made apps for dinner with Maddie and Emma for our movie night on Saturday….I needed this!
