If you are a mom who has planned a family portrait session…you know how stressful it can be! We all know how important it is to capture special moments in our family’s lives. But I also know that it takes a lot of work.
We work hard to coordinate wardrobes, we get up early to make sure everyone has showered, help with hair (and makeup if you have teen girls….ahhhhh!!), and make sure everyone has eaten and is happy. Annnnddddd then we show up to the location… in July… in the south….and we all begin to melt. Our hair grows, our makeup runs, we have sweat stains, the bugs are bad, you try to keep the teenagers (or little ones) from getting cranky, the men are quiet because they are secretly wondering how long this will last….yes, this is the REAL side of family portraits. Unedited.
I know it because I often see it on my clients’ faces when they arrive and it is my job to make sure their client experience is wonderful when they arrive. I try to ease mom’s mind by quickly assessing the personalities and finding a way to connect. As a teacher, I instantly know how to form those quick bonds. Then it’s time to let dad know that it will be a painless process and that he might leave the session having had a good time…and even be eager to come back next year!! hahaha. Truly, it is such a joy to form wonderful friendships with my clients!! Friendships that continue through the years.
Nevertheless, I understand the struggles because I go through the same things when I do my own family’s portraits. Hahahaha!! We recently had my family in town for a week’s stay-cation. My brother and sister in law are moving back from Argentina to Nebraska and Kevin travels a ton…. my parents were here also, so we literally had ONE DAY where everyone was here and we could take new pics. The last ones we did were four years ago when Everett was a toddler and Grace had just gotten braces. Wow have they all grown!! It was super important for us to capture these great memories. And can I just say that because our girls live with me, you’d think they’d always be up for pics….um….not exactly. I get a lot of sighing, how much longer, and really mom?!?! They don’t find me humorous!! Go figure?!!?
But we did manage to pull it all together and get some amazing portraits!! I love you all and I’m so glad we were able to make these wonderful memories!! Let’s pray the next time we’re doing family portraits isn’t when Grace is getting married!!! hahahaah
Blessings,
Corry
